What does 100% Straight South African mean?

Boer Goats are native to South Africa, all USA Boer Goats originated from imported South African stock.

How did they get to the USA?

  • Some were directly imported to the USA from South Africa in the early 1990's.

  • Others were exported from South Africa to New Zealand and Australia in the late 1980's. Their offspring were eventually imported to the USA in the mid-1990's.

In other words, American Boer Goats came from two main sources: One source came straight from South Africa. The other source came via New Zealand and Australia.

What's the difference between the Boer Goats imported directly from South Africa vs. those that came from New Zealand and Australia?

  • Some say that the goats that were imported from New Zealand and Australia were not as good as the ones directly imported from South Africa. They say that the demand for Boer Goats in the USA market was so strong in the 1990's that Americans "bought anything" and that because of that, the New Zealanders and Australians shipped their culls to the USA and kept the best for themselves.

  • Others say that because of selective breeding and good management practices since their arrival in the USA, the quality of New Zealand and Australian imported goats is now no different than the quality of the direct South African imports. In addition, many of the direct South African / USA imports and their offspring have been bred with New Zealand and Australian imports and their offspring, equalizing the mix and leveling the playing field.

The term "American Boer Goats" has been coined for this refined generation of goats and the notion that "it doesn't matter where they came from, they're all originally from South Africa" has become popular.

  • Yes, all fullblood Boer Goats do originate from pure South African stock. Nevertheless, the unquestionable quality and solid breeding foundation of the straight line descendants of the original, critically chosen, hand-picked South Africa / USA imported goats remains unique and highly desirable.

The term "100% Straight South African" should only be used for straight line descendants of the original direct South Africa / USA imports.

  • Documented descendants of directly imported South Africa to USA Boer Goats with no New Zealand or Australian registered goats in their pedigree histories are the only ones that should be called "100% Straight South African".

  • Verification of 100% Straight South African heritage can be difficult and requires strong diligence and accurate research on the part of the breeder.

  • Remember, even "one" goat from New Zealand or Australia in a pedigree will mean that it is not "100% Straight South African".
